Fanad Gaels overcame Glenfin in an low scoring but exciting encounter in Portsalon on Saturday evening.
Fanad opened the scoring with a point from William McAteer followed by a point from Glenfin. Fanad went ahead with a second point from Seamus Friel. It looked like this was going to be the scene set for the game, when in the 20th minute a long ball from Patrick Shiels found Seamus Friel, who was fouled in the square. A penalty was awarded resulting in Fanad Gaels first goal, as Friel blasted past the Glenfin goal-keeper Benji O’Meara, leaving the home side 1-02 to 01 ahead.
Three further points from the Fanad men left a half time score line of 1-05 to 03. Glenfin started the second half on a more positive note scoring the first point, but ten minutes in Seamus Friel found the net for the second time following a Colm McElwaine pass.
Glenfin dominated for the following ten minutes resulting in two points and then a goal on sixteen minutes.
A minute later Fanad had the ball up the field and Seamus Friel (Junior) scored a magnificent goal, which had been flicked on by Michael Sweeney.
Glenfin’s cause wasn’t helped by the sending off of two of their players in the last ten minutes.
